Mickeal Cadore (A.S. '19)
Mickeal Cadore (A.S. ’19) seamlessly transitioned from Georgia State’s Perimeter College to the Atlanta Campus. As the native of Marietta, Ga., got involved on campus, he made connections with professors and staff, and was able to take advantage of the university’s resources. Now finishing his bachelor’s degree program, Cadore is preparing to inspire students in his hometown with lessons on the importance of health and physical fitness.
Interview by Jordan Ferguson
Tell me about yourself and how you got to Georgia State.
I’m a fifth-year senior at Georgia State University. I started at Perimeter’s Dunwoody Campus and received my associate degree in health science. I’m working toward my bachelor’s in health and physical education on the sports coaching track.
I chose Georgia State mainly because of its diversity. It is also not too far from home — 30 minutes to be exact — and I had a lot of friends who came here.
What type of activities are you involved in?
Right now, I’m a presidential ambassador for the 1913 Society. There, I assist the president and the university with events. I’m also part of My Brother’s Keeper, a mentorship program in the Honors College. I help mentor incoming first-year students and develop my professional and personal goals.
What is your plan as a health and physical education major?
I plan to become a teacher at one of the middle schools in the Marietta area. I want to give back to the community where I was raised.
I’ve always loved teaching kids. I was a camp counselor for Georgia 4-H for about three years, and I loved teaching kids and seeing their faces light up when they enjoyed something I taught them or when we played a game. When I do become a PE coach at a school, I want to see that in my students, and I want them to enjoy PE. When I was in high school, a lot of kids didn’t dress out. They would sit on the side and be disengaged. I want my students to be engaged.
What advice would you give those transitioning from high school to Perimeter College and those coming to the downtown campus?
I would say relax. Be more involved in college than you were in high school. For me, I wasn’t in many clubs. I was playing sports. Then, I came to college and I stopped. I chose to get involved and attended the career and organization fairs and I’m glad because that’s where I met some of my closest friends.
I would also advise students to be on point with your assignments and pay attention to the syllabus because that syllabus is like your proverbial Holy Grail for that class. Lastly, get to know your professors.
As a student of two campuses, what has been your favorite spot?
Since it was built, I really love the greenway and the renovation they did to the University Library, where we can go outside and still be in the library area. I like to sit there and study. Also, one that just opened up about a year ago is the bottom-level area of the library, the Study Commons. I love being there.
What is something about Georgia State that many people may not know?
The professors are great, especially in my major. They all want to see the best in you and are willing to work with you. That’s something I look for and admire.
I love that we are among the most diverse campuses in the U.S. Here, you can meet new people from different parts of the world every day.
If you want to transition from one of the Perimeter campuses to the downtown campus, do it. It’s easy and worth it. It’s a seamless transition and only an application away. Of course, some requirements must be met, but go for it and continue at Georgia State!
