According to the Georgia Department of Education’s second grade mathematics standards, students should learn how to tell time on both analog and digital clocks and use “a.m.” and “p.m.” to designate the time of day.
Elementary education student Tikerrya Hill helped teach this standard to second grade students during her student teaching experience this semester.
During these time-telling lessons, she worked closely with a handful of students who’d been struggling with mathematics this year. The result? This group of students all showed improvement when tested on the subject.
“They are more confident in their math abilities now than I’ve ever seen them,” Hill said of the experience. “I am very proud that I was able to get through to those students, and I continue to work closely with them every chance I get.”
Hill was recognized for her academic achievements at the College of Education & Human Development’s annual Honors Day Ceremony on April 16.
She is a 2024 recipient of the Outstanding Undergraduate in Elementary and Early Childhood Education Award, which recognizes excellence and scholarship in the Bachelor of Science in Education in Elementary Education program with a concentration in preschool through grade five.
“This award means that with hard work and dedication, your time and efforts will be seen,” Hill said. “I would like to thank my cohort for always being there to answer any questions I had, my mom for always being there and supporting me on my journey, and the teachers and professors I had who helped me see that learning can be fun and inspiring.”
