Through the Georgia Legislative Intern Program (GLIP), Political Science major Lauryn Bennett-Walker is one step closer to fulfilling her aspiration of becoming an attorney.
Bennett-Walker, a fourth-year Political Science major with a concentration in Pre-Law, worked with the House Retirement Committee recently as part of her internship program and was offered a full-time position before the internship was over.
"Finding a job after college is any recent graduate’s fear, but having it before graduation gives me the peace of mind and drive to finish school up as near as possible this December," Bennett-Walker said. "Plus, I can start saving for grad school even sooner now. What’s not to love?”
Bennett-Walker, who is from from Lithonia, learned about the GLIP from an email sent out to students. She said she learns best through doing, and working at the capitol has been a perfect opportunity for her.
"I'm glad I was able to experience this and I would recommend it to anyone wanting political experience or just wanting to be close to the people behind the making of state laws."
Bennett-Walker is now the administrative assistant for the House State Planning Community Affairs Committee and the House Reapportionment & Redistricting Committee.
With hopes of becoming a practicing attorney in family or corporate law in the future, Bennett-Walker said she plans to work in her role as an administrative assistant to help her pay for law school.
