Our Georgia State University Police Department has responded to several incidents over the past few weeks involving GSU students near our housing corridor along Piedmont Avenue.
The behavior GSUPD has observed from some of our students is disappointing and unacceptable.
We have observed social media posts promoting parties at off-campus housing facilities that have led to large and unruly crowds. These large gatherings have led to off campus property damage and incidents of random fireworks and gun fire. The security and well-being of the GSU community is always our primary concern. Some of the behavior that we have observed at these events is unlawful. Other behaviors are in violation of the Student Code of Conduct. For your safety, attending such events, even as a spectator is strongly discouraged.
GSUPD, in conjunction with Georgia State Patrol and the Atlanta Police Department are reviewing video surveillance footage and social media posts to identify those that were involved in any unlawful behavior and will aggressively prosecute all involved that have been identified as committing any criminal acts. We are also sharing this surveillance with our Office of the Dean of Students to identify any Student Code of Conduct violations. Whether on or off campus, students can be held accountable through Student Conduct for behavior that put themselves or the GSU community at risk. Violations can lead to consequences up to and including expulsion.
We ask that everyone continue to do their part to make Georgia State University a safe, productive and enjoyable environment.
