To the university community,
The safety of our Georgia State students, faculty and staff will always be the paramount priority of the administration and we are committed to listening and responding to the concerns of the community and to keep everyone informed of our actions. Below, please find the latest updates on our ongoing efforts to enhance our campuses and address safety concerns at the university.
We are pleased to announce that we have completed our full campus safety assessment and we are now developing and implementing interventions. In our assessment, parking decks on the Atlanta campus were identified as areas of high safety exposure and we have already taken action by adding high speed gates, swipe access to doors, lights and mirrors. We also recently closed I Deck because we couldn’t secure it to our satisfaction. Additionally, we just finalized our plans to add new lighting fixtures that improve visibility in locations of concern around the Atlanta Campus. On the Perimeter campuses we have already completed an integration of the alarm systems so that all alerts on any of the GSU campuses are routed to our central communications center and we can respond with the full breadth of our resources. Next we will finalize our plans for additional external cameras and call boxes across all of our campuses.
We have enhanced our communications protocols and are completing the development of a new website where we will regularly post updates on campus safety and operations to keep everyone informed about the status of our initiatives and interventions. The website will also include information about existing safety resources, such as the Georgia State University Livesafe app and campus escort services.
We continue to work closely with our external partners — including city officials, Central Atlanta Progress, Atlanta Police and other law enforcement agencies, and several private property owners — to coordinate our efforts. Off-campus activity near our campus affects our community, and we are engaging our neighbors to work together to develop and implement solutions.
Campus safety will always be instrumental to facilitating the experience that our students, faculty and staff deserve and require to be successful, and we know that there is more to be done. All of us can meaningfully contribute to a safe and productive environment. Never hesitate to report observations and submit suggestions about how we can improve the safety and security of our campus community. The everlasting commitment from the administration is to always listen closely, plan carefully and take action. We appreciate your feedback and your partnership in creating our best Georgia State University.
