"The age-old slogan 'Music for every child, every child for music' should be apparent in the journal content published by NAfME [National Association for Music Education]. Equity in music programs is a popular conversation, but everyone tends to have a different definition of what equity is or how to implement it." Ashante Griffin, a current Ph.D. student in the School of Music, has been focusing on equity in music education and focused in on NAfME's three research-based journals to see how often articles are published related to this topic. Her latest presentation, presented at the 2022 Graduate Research Conference, was titled "How Have Equity Issues in Music Education Been Identified and Acknowledged in Articles Published by NAFME Journals From 2001- Present Day." The data Griffin collected highlights "implications for research, for future authors, and for music teachers in urban schools." Griffin hopes that as we move towards more equitable music education programs, researchers feel more empowered to submit articles related to equity.
