ATLANTA – The Gender and Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) at Georgia State University has received a $100,000 gift from Georgia State alumnus and former Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Darryl Holloman (B.A. ‘95, M.P.A. ‘99, Ph.D. ‘05).
Holloman’s gift will help fund GSRC’s cultural and community-based programming that supports those identifying as LGBTQIA+ and fosters a more inclusive campus. It will also establish the endowed Bayard Rustin & Pauli Murray LGBTQ+ Legacy Award, named after two early champions of LGBTQIA+ equality. The $1,000 award will be given annually at the Georgia State Lavender Graduation ceremony.
In recognition of and gratitude for the gift, the Gender & Sexuality Center’s Resource Room on the second floor of Student Center East will be renamed the Dr. Darryl B. Holloman Gender and Sexuality Resource Room.
“I’m deeply honored to give back to the place – the first place – I felt a true sense of belonging, the place where I affirmed my identity as a gay, African American man” said Holloman, vice president for student affairs for Spelman College. “Spaces like the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center are vital to fostering inclusivity at Georgia State and providing Panthers who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community a space of intention and belonging.”
Located within the Georgia State Multicultural Center, which is part of the Cultures, Communities, and Inclusion unit of the Office of the Dean of Students, the GSRC provides resources, intentional support and services, including programming, workshops and mentoring, for students identifying as or connecting to LGBTQIA+ and varying gender identities. The center seeks to enhance students’ academic and career success by building a culture that fosters identity awareness, identity acceptance and support.
Through his more than 30-year higher education administration career in positions centered on student life and student affairs, Holloman understands the essential role spaces like the GSRC have in a campus community.
“At every institution I’ve worked for I’ve seen how students need a space on campus where they can process and interrogate what they learned in the classroom,” said Holloman. “LGBTQIA+ students can often feel on the fringes of a university community, so providing them a vibrant and welcoming space that fosters their learning needs and allows them to explore and affirm their identity is an important part of Georgia State’s mission.”
“The GSRC it also is an important part of helping Georgia State enrich cultural awareness within its community, recruit and retain students and provide Panthers with experiences that produce the kind of culturally competent graduates all businesses are seeking.”
