Ali Manning heavily researched Robinson’s Master of Global Hospitality Management (MGHM) program before applying. Because the program is housed within a business school, she anticipated building a wealth of transferable skills. The broad curriculum would expose her to all aspects of the industry, including food and beverage, hotels, and events. Plus, she was eager to take advantage of learning and networking opportunities outside of the classroom. Manning’s expectations were met. For example, at the 2019 Smith Travel Research (STR) Market Study Competition in New York City, she and her teammates conducted a data-backed analysis of the hotel industry in Nashville, Tenn.
“The program got me out of my comfort zone,” Manning said. “There were plenty of opportunities to get involved beyond just attending class.”
Manning knew a lot about the program before enrolling but was pleased to discover she would earn Cvent Supplier Network and Hotel Industry Analytics certifications. Those credentials drastically increased her marketability. She graduated in May 2020 and started working as a sales and marketing coordinator at Nobu Hotel Palo Alto. In the role, she handled revenue allocation, led site tours for potential clients, and analyzed competitor data for group sales and event planning.
In May 2022, Manning landed a position as a corporate travel specialist on the global sales strategy team at IHG Hotels & Resorts in Atlanta. She manages more than 400 hotels and reviews rates through reports pulled from software platforms such as STR, ART (A Reporting Tool), and A360.
Manning was first exposed to IHG through a meet-and-greet and training session with company staff. The day-long event was arranged by MGHM program director Soon-Ho Kim. She built a lifelong network with not only the faculty but also her classmates.
“The program connects people from around the world at different phases of their careers, giving us a global outlook on the industry,” Manning said.
