Regarding faculty excellence, the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Online Education (CETLOE) is an integral partner and resource that advances the scholarship and practice of exemplary instruction at Georgia State University. The CETLOE Mini-Grants program supports faculty for new teaching projects or expanding on current projects. Awarded annually, faculty receive mini-grants, each up to $3,500, whose proposals fall within one of three categories: Scholarship of Teaching and Learning; General Pedagogy and Teaching Practices; and College to Careers.
CETLOE awarded two 2022-2023 mini-grants to the College of the Arts faculty members.
Mary Emily Deal, Academic Professional in Theatre, School of Film, Media & Theatre, Category: College to Careers
Program: "You Are Not Alone" performance, in continuation of the Give Back Series, brings awareness to issues that affect students and the Georgia State community. "You Are Not Alone" will be performed live and recorded, raising awareness of mental health issues, particularly among young people suffering from the pandemic.
This fall, students will develop and write "You Are Not Alone" in a similar style to Tectonic Theatre's development of The Laramie Project. In the spring, they will perform live on stage and record the performance. Students will have the opportunity to work as a professional ensemble, publish written text and musical composition, and be a part of short films that could enter film festivals. The program also proposes to partner with on and off-campus resources that can help stimulate not only compassion but action.
"You Are Not Alone" came from recognizing the devastation of the pandemic on collective mental health. The isolation students felt from social distancing and the fear and anxiety of the unknown were and continue to be profound.
According to Deal, "I saw the students withdrawing into places that I could not reach them. They were literally alone. I want to create something that will reach these students and let them know they are not alone."
Hoa Vo, Assistant Professor (Interior Design), Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design, Category: General Pedagogy and Teaching Practices
Program: Implement Virtual Reality (VR) modeling and 3-D printing technologies in teaching Interior Design students lighting design. The VR modeling software is the enterprise version of Gravity Sketch, a leading VR design technologies company, which provided students with free access through the partnership initiated by Professor Vo since fall 2021. The Creative Media Industries Institute (CMII) and EXLAB Atlanta also support Professor Vo in executing this teaching initiative.
"The pool of proposals was very competitive this year. Less than half of the applications got funded," said Professor Vo. I am thankful for the support of CETLOE to keep students updated with new technologies."
