College of Education & Human Development Professor Susan Auslander and Assistant Dean for Educator Preparation and Accreditation Carla Tanguay received $139,191 in grant funding from the Georgia Department of Education to prepare high-quality elementary mathematics specialists.
The Developing Elementary Mathematics Specialists (DEMS) Project recruits teachers for two online endorsements – one in K-5 mathematics and one in teacher support and coaching – that will strengthen their mathematics teaching skills and train them to become teacher leaders.
Project participants can also apply their coursework toward the college’s online M.Ed. in elementary education program, which requires another six courses after completing the endorsements.
“The project aims to develop participants as highly effective and equitable teachers of mathematics and as teacher leaders in their schools and districts,” Auslander said. “They will be equipped to support needed systemic improvements in mathematics education and provide coaching for fellow teachers and Georgia State University’s teacher candidates, which is a critical contributor to fostering teacher induction and retention.”
