ATLANTA – Lars Mathiassen, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar and professor of computer information systems at Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business, has won the 2021 Association for Information Systems (AIS) Fellow Award. It was presented to him on Dec. 13 at the International Conference on Information Systems in Austin.
The AIS Fellow Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the information systems discipline in research, teaching, and service, globally and in their country and region.
Mathiassen, co-founder of Robinson’s Center for Digital Innovation, researches the development, use and management of information technology in multiple organizational contexts and industries. An advocate of the engaged scholarship research model, he works closely with industry professionals on projects that contribute to practice as well as theoretical knowledge.
His enthusiasm for the engaged scholarship approach inspired Mathiassen to found Robinson’s Doctor of Business Administration program in 2010. The rigorous, three-year practitioner-doctorate program has graduated more than 150 alumni.
Throughout his career, Mathiassen has collaborated with younger researchers on the design and practice of engaged scholarship. He has co-authored research publications with more than 70 early-career researchers at numerous institutions worldwide and has frequently served as faculty on doctoral consortia.
“Lars has made outstanding contributions to the field of information systems through an engaged scholarship approach to research, his mentoring of doctoral students and junior faculty, and his extensive service contributions,” said Richard Phillips, dean of the Robinson College.
Arun Rai, Regents’ Professor, Howard S. Starks Distinguished Chair and co-founder of the Center for Digital Innovation said, “Throughout my colleague’s and collaborator’s distinguished career, Lars has developed bridges between academia and practice to put theory into practice and practice into theory. We are enormously proud his achievements are being recognized with the AIS Fellow Award.”
Mathiassen co-founded the “Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems” and has served as senior editor of “MIS Quarterly,” “Information & Organization,” and the “Journal of Information Technology.” He is currently senior editor of “Engaged Management ReView.” Mathiassen has a Ph.D. in informatics from Oslo IT University, Norway, and a Doctor Tech in Software Engineering from Aalborg University, Denmark. He also holds honorary doctorates from Umeå University (Sweden) and Copenhagen University (Denmark).
Mathiassen is the seventh Robinson College faculty member to win the AIS Fellow Award. He joins recipients Ephraim McLean (1999), Daniel Robey (2004), Detmar Straub (2005), Arun Rai (2010), Mark Keil (2018) and Veda Storey (2018).
