ATLANTA -- Madlina Jonassaint received the 2017 Nell Hamilton Trotter Award at the Georgia State University fall undergraduate commencement ceremony. She was recognized for her outstanding commitment to student involvement and leadership.
For the second consecutive semester, a student from the Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions has garnered the Trotter Award, which is the highest student leadership award presented by the university.
Jonassaint was inspired to become a leader during her first campus tour at Georgia State.
“I loved the culture and diversity, and that tour left a lasting impression on the ways in which I could fit in and give back,” she says. Her leadership activities on campus include serving as a 1913 Society student ambassador, a new student orientation leader, a Welcome Center tour guide, a Panther L.E.A.P cohort leader and peer mentor, and a Quiet Storm Stepper mentor.
Jonassaint pursued her bachelor of science in nursing based other influences: her family.
“Growing up, I shadowed my mom who is an immigrant from Haiti and now works as a case manager at Piedmont Henry Hospital,” she said. “This experience shaped my desire to help others and make a difference.”
Leadership comes naturally to Jonaissant, and she acknowledges that she thrives while serving as a mentor. She also says that many of her roles, such as being a 1913 Ambassador and the 2015-2016 Homecoming Princess were an opportunity to inspire others.
Jonassaint was inducted into the Honors College after her freshman year and says that the close interaction among students and professors in this program contributed to her academic success. Her sisters in the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority also supported her in academic, leadership and career goals.
Her professional career begins post-graduation when she will work as a nurse at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
“I am eternally grateful for all of the opportunities I have had at Georgia State. I didn’t know I could do so much, and the university has been a stepping stone to not only my career but my life.”
She plans to return to Georgia State to earn master’s degrees in healthcare administration and science in nursing.
