ATLANTA—Mindy Stombler, senior lecturer and director of instruction in the Department of Sociology, recently received the 2017 Carla B. Howery Award for Developing Teacher-Scholars.
The Howery Award honors teachers and scholars who have contributed significantly to the training and mentoring of future sociology leaders. The award is given yearly at the American Sociological Association’s (ASA) Annual Meeting.
“I appreciate the award committee’s recognition of the intensive and extensive graduate teacher training program I have been running in the Department of Sociology since 2003,” said Stombler. “But more than anything, this award is really about the accomplishments of my graduate students. As I compiled evidence for my award application dossier, I was gobsmacked by how successful my former students are in the area of teaching, and the breadth and depth of their teaching accomplishments and accolades. It made me so incredibly proud!”
At Georgia State, Stombler’s primary focus is on teaching, from undergraduate learning and textbook production to graduate teacher training. She has co-authored a number of publications including Sex Matters: The Sexuality and Society Reader and Focus on Social Problems: A Contemporary Reader.
