ATLANTA—Georgia State University will offer a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program to meet the growing need for public health professionals with advanced training and preparation for positions in leadership, applied research and other practice-based roles.
The degree was approved April 18 by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. The graduate program will accept degree-seeking students in fall 2018.
The program will be run by Georgia State’s School of Public Health, which offers a bachelor of science in public health, master of public health degree in five concentrations, Ph.D. programs in four concentrations, a graduate certificate in public health and several dual degrees.
The DrPH program will give public health professionals who may not be interested in a research career in academia an opportunity to pursue a doctorate. The program will prepare graduates for careers as senior-level administrators, applied researchers, policy makers and educators who will provide leadership to protect and improve the public’s health.
“People often refer to Atlanta as the capital of public health because we are home to so many organizations that have a mission of helping people live longer, happier, more productive lives,” said Michael P. Eriksen, dean of the School of Public Health. “We are very excited to offer this program, which will be of value to those who want to advance their career and make a real difference in people’s lives, whether their work is in Georgia or around the world.”
Georgia State trains one of the most diverse groups of public health students in the United States and was the first state university to offer public health degree programs in metro Atlanta, home to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Georgia Department of Public Health, American Cancer Society, CARE and other public and private entities devoted to public health work across Georgia and around the world. The School of Public Health has more than 600 students and nearly 700 graduates, with most working in Georgia.
