The College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce that Dr. John Augusto will join Georgia State in the position of Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives, effective February 1, 2018. Dr. Augusto currently serves as Assistant Vice Provost for Experiential Learning at the University of Kansas. With Dr. Augusto's hire, the College of Arts and Sciences fills its fourth and final associate dean position under Dean Sara Rosen. Dr. Augusto’s role as associate dean will be 100% administrative, and will not carry a faculty appointment.
Dr. Augusto brings to the college a wealth of experience implementing institution-wide strategic initiatives and programs that support both undergraduate and graduate education in the liberal arts and sciences. In his current position at KU, Dr. Augusto has directed the Center for Undergraduate Research, Center for Service Learning, and overseen the Office of Fellowships within Undergraduate Studies. He has worked with faculty and academic leaders at KU to grow experiential learning opportunities, promote undergraduate research, track undergraduate certificate programs and service learning courses, and build new programs based on public-private partnerships. In a prior position as Assistant Dean in the KU Office of Graduate Studies, Dr. Augusto was instrumental in streamlining their graduate application and admission process, creating degree program profiles and enhancing milestone tracking in graduate degree programs, and developing new graduate certificate and professional development programs. Throughout his more than 25-year career in higher education, Dr. Augusto has worked with academic leaders from all corners of his university and provided support to faculty from a broad range of disciplines, earning a reputation as a “bridge builder between silos.” In doing so, he has driven curricular and programmatic innovations that are discipline-appropriate as well as skills-based and career-focused.
In her message to faculty and staff, Dean Rosen described the Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives hire as filling "a pivotal missing link in the college’s plans to develop and leverage corporate and non-profit partnerships to offer new educational and career opportunities to our students," and added: "I look forward to welcoming Dr. Augusto to the college leadership team and working with him to realize these and other strategic goals."
