Originally planted in 2012 by Perimeter College faculty, staff and students, the Decatur Community Garden is a 9,000-square-foot plot with 18 raised beds and a butterfly garden.It grows 1,000 pounds of food a year. Most of it is donated to the United Methodist Children’s Home in Decatur.
It’s open to anyone in the Georgia State or local communities to help with gardening or have a plot. If you help weed, much or water, you can take some produce home.
This summer, it’s growing everything from blueberries to chilies to eggplant.
Over the course of the year, the garden grows acorn squash, asparagus (yard-long) beans, beets, blackberries, black-eyed peas, blueberries, butternut squash, canary melons, cantaloupe, carrots, chilies, cucumbers, eggplant, herbs (basil, lemon balm, lemon grass, lemon thyme, savory thyme, mint, lavender, sage, pineapple sage, parsley, chives, rosemary, oregano and dill), kale, lemon cucumbers, maize, peppers, potatoes, purple cabbage, scarlet runner beans, sorrel, spinach, strawberries, sunflowers, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, turnips, watermelons, yellow squash and zucchini.
